Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has announced that the poultry industry has collapsed, stressing the urgent need for intervention. Speaking on JoyNews’ Roundtable on Wednesday, March 12, he stated that the new ‘Nkukor Nkitinkiti’ policy, also known as the Poultry Farm to Table project, is designed to revive the sector and boost agricultural production.

The initiative falls under a broader agriculture and economic transformation agenda, which includes the Feed Ghana Programme, the Ghana Grains Development Project, and the Vegetable Development Project.

“It is not just about distributing chicks to farmers. It is a structured program that integrates multiple agricultural activities, including grain production, vegetable farming, and tuber cultivation,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

The government has allocated ¢1.5 billion to fund the initiative, acknowledging concerns about whether the amount is sufficient. However, Kwakye Ofosu expressed confidence that consistent implementation will attract private investment and expand the industry.

“As the economy grows and more funds become available, we will increase allocations to ensure more people can venture into agriculture,” he assured.

The policy also aligns with government efforts to tackle unemployment by creating jobs within the agricultural value chain. With this initiative, the government aims to strengthen food security, promote economic self-sufficiency, and restore Ghana’s poultry sector.
