Former President Nana Akufo-Addo revealed that over 2.7 million bags of fertilizer were distributed under the “Planting for Food and Jobs” policy, leading to increased crop yields and enhanced food security.
He claimed significant growth in maize, rice, and soybean production from 2017 to 2023, alongside the establishment of agricultural mechanization centers and improved irrigation schemes.
However, the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has criticized the policy, claiming it did not benefit farmers fully due to hoarding, corruption, and substandard inputs.
The World Bank also pointed out that only 3% of Ghana’s farming land is irrigated, with a significant portion of irrigation systems non-functional. Dry spells have caused major crop revenue losses, especially in the Northern and Savannah regions.
