Finance Minister Ato Forson has refuted former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam’s claim that the previous administration never implemented the betting tax.
Dr. Amin Adam stated that it was deceptive for the government to repeal a tax that was never enforced. However, Ato Forson countered, saying the tax was implemented in the second half of 2024 and had already generated over GH₵80 million.
The 10% withholding tax on betting and lottery winnings, introduced under the NPP government, faced public opposition. Interestingly, during his 2024 campaign, NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, promised to abolish the betting tax if elected.
The debate raises concerns over transparency in tax collection and implementation under the previous administration.
