Energy Minister-designate John Jinapor has raised concerns about revenue leakage within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, he revealed that ECG generates about GHC1.3 billion monthly, but only GHC850–900 million is allocated to the cash waterfall mechanism, leaving nearly GHC400 million unaccounted for.
Jinapor attributed this to inefficiencies, including numerous contracts signed by ECG and 2,500 containers currently held at the ports. He noted that contracts worth GHC9 billion have been signed, and demurrage costs alone amount to GHC1.2 billion.
Jinapor emphasized the need for improved efficiency and compliance with the cash waterfall mechanism to address these issues and ensure financial accountability within ECG.
