The Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah, condemned the disruption at the National Assay Centre on December 17, 2024.
A mob, allegedly led by Joseph Yammin, National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stormed the facility in an attempt to seize bullion bars being processed for the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
Awuah expressed his disappointment over the incident, highlighting PMMC’s successful collaboration with the BoG in boosting Ghana's gold reserves through the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP). This initiative, launched in June 2021, has seen Ghana's gold reserves grow from 8.7 tonnes to 28.1 tonnes, making the country number five in Africa for gold reserves.
Awuah described the mob’s allegations of gold smuggling as baseless, emphasizing PMMC’s transparent operations with multiple state agencies, including the Ghana Revenue Authority, Customs, NACOB, National Security, and Aviation Security, ensuring the integrity of gold exports.
Despite the disruption, a compromise was reached, and the gold was escorted to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for safekeeping before being returned to the BoG with sealed boxes for added security.
