The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) is taking immediate action to enhance security at the National Assay Centre, located at the Aviance Cargo Terminal at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, following a disruption on December 17.
The incident involved a mob, allegedly led by Joseph Yammin, National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), attempting to seize bullion bars being processed for the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
PMMC’s Managing Director, Nana Akwasi Awuah, described the chaotic events during an appearance on the Asaase Breakfast Show. According to Awuah, the mob attacked security personnel, forcibly entered the lab, and disrupted operations in a critical security zone.
Awuah pointed out that despite the presence of police, military, and private security personnel at the facility, the incident revealed vulnerabilities in the existing security measures.
He assured that the company would review and reinforce security arrangements at the assay centre to ensure the safety of staff and operations going forward.
The attack has deeply affected PMMC staff, with many shaken by the event. Awuah emphasized the importance of rebuilding staff confidence, ensuring their safety, and reassuring them of the company’s commitment to secure operations.
As a result of the ongoing reviews, the National Assay Centre remains closed until further notice.
