Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade visits Sunda Ghana, vows support for local industry

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism visited Sunda Ghana Limited. This visit was part of their oversight role to support industrial activities in the country.

The goal was to understand the company's operations and challenges. They also wanted to explore how the government can help local manufacturers contribute more to the economy.

Mr. Wei Yea, Managing Director of Sunda Ghana Limited, welcomed the delegation. He presented details about the company’s operations and growth in Ghana.

He expressed concerns about smuggling, especially low-quality diapers entering the market. This issue forced Sunda Ghana to shut down two production lines and lay off 350 workers.

Mr. Wei urged the Committee to combat illegal trade practices. He emphasized that local manufacturers need protection and support from the government.

He reaffirmed Sunda Ghana's commitment to producing high-quality goods. However, he stressed that stronger policies are needed against unfair competition.

Committee Chairman Mr. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordzie praised Sunda Ghana's transparency. He acknowledged the company's important role in job creation and industrial development.

He noted that many developments occur in Ghana without public awareness. Therefore, Mr. Mahama Ayariga has tasked Committees with gathering data during this recess.

This data will inform decisions as President Akufo-Addo resets Ghana’s economy. Mr. Hottordzie highlighted the importance of supporting local industries like Sunda Ghana.

Supporting these companies aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s 24-hour economy policy. This policy aims to boost productivity and stimulate economic growth through continuous industrial activity.

The Committee assured Sunda Ghana of its commitment to address smuggling issues. They aim to create a better environment for local businesses to thrive.
