Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed concern over the high cost of passport application fees, calling them a financial burden on citizens.
Speaking on TV3 on February 8, he emphasized that a passport is a fundamental right, not a luxury, and pledged to review the pricing structure to enhance affordability.
Ablakwa, who was sworn into office on February 7, assured that addressing this issue would be a top priority. He plans to conduct a comprehensive cost review, explore subsidies, and leverage digitization to reduce administrative costs.
He also called for public engagement and stakeholder consultations to ensure reforms benefit all Ghanaians, stating, “We must balance sustainability with fairness.”
