The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has urged Eric Opoku, the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, to prioritize irrigation development to address climate change's impact on agriculture.
PFAG President Wepia Adugwala emphasized that Ghana must transition from rain-fed agriculture to resilient methods, including widespread irrigation, to ensure sustainable food production.
He highlighted the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, capable of irrigating over 15,000 hectares, as a vital yet underutilized resource. Adugwala called for expanding the dam's use and modernizing agriculture infrastructure to support farmers adapting to climate change.
He stressed that irrigation is crucial for consistent food production and farmer livelihoods, especially in northern Ghana. Adugwala urged swift action to secure the sector's sustainability amidst changing climate conditions.
