Philanthropist Agongo partners local initiative to alleviate hunger in Bongo District

The initiative is now in its sixth year. It originally supported 20 beneficiaries. This year, it expanded significantly due to Alhaji Agongo's involvement.

Abugre, from Adaboya-Kunkoe, explained the choice to distribute food. She said this ensures direct access to nourishment. "What began as support for 20 individuals has grown to about 70," she noted. Each bag of maize was valued between GHS 40,000 and GHS 42,000. The maize was divided among three households to maximize reach.

Adaboya-Kunkoe relies on subsistence farming. However, erratic rainfall and poor harvests have strained this reliance. This situation has worsened food insecurity in the area. The distribution took place at a neutral venue to reduce stigma. Young volunteers helped those who were bedridden or had mobility issues.

Community leader Bernard Adongo moderated the event. It opened with a prayer led by a beneficiary, showing collective gratitude. Agongo is an Accra-based businessman known for supporting marginalized communities. He described the partnership as part of his broader philanthropic efforts.

While this year's donation marks progress, Abugre acknowledged ongoing needs. She urged for continued support to help more residents. The initiative shows a growing reliance on local partnerships in northern Ghana. Climate-driven challenges threaten agricultural stability due to inconsistent rains.

These efforts not only address immediate hunger but also strengthen community solidarity in affected regions.
