Agriculture Minister-nominee Eric Opoku has expressed concern over Ghana’s poultry sector, labeling it as “in comatose.” He highlighted that only 4.6% of the country’s 324,000 metric tons of poultry consumption in 2022 was locally produced, with the rest imported.
Speaking during his vetting, he outlined plans to revamp the sector, focusing on making poultry feed affordable to curb food inflation and stabilize egg and poultry prices.
Key measures include the NDC’s “Poultry Farm-to-Table Programme,” aimed at providing financial support to farmers to boost production and close the supply-demand gap.
Opoku emphasized the urgency of investing in the sector to address rising food inflation, which has been exacerbated by high egg costs.
