President John Dramani Mahama met with the Ghana Cocoa, Coffee, and Sheanut Farmers Association (COCOSHE). He expressed concerns about the financial crisis at Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
Mahama noted that COCOBOD is over GHS32 billion in debt. He recalled better days during his previous term, which ended in January 2017. At that time, COCOBOD had sound policies.
He pointed out that these financial struggles have stalled projects. This situation is severely affecting farmers' livelihoods.
During the meeting with COCOSHE, Mahama stressed the need for a reset this year. He wants the government to ensure fair prices for farmers, maintaining at least 70% of the producer price.
He also called for incentives and improved farming methods to attract more people to the sector.
Additionally, Mahama addressed the crisis at the Produce Buying Company (PBC). He urged a full audit and prosecution if necessary.
He highlighted the need for urgent action regarding the struggling sheanut factory in Buipe. Accountability and revitalization are crucial for its success.
