President John Mahama has announced plans to introduce private sector participation in ECG’s metering and billing operations to improve revenue collection and reduce losses.
Speaking during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025), he highlighted the GH₵70 billion energy sector debt despite GH₵45 billion in ESLA collections over eight years.
To address financial challenges, he directed the Energy Minister to enforce a single revenue account, ensure CWM compliance, and cut wasteful spending. A successful pilot with Enclave Power will guide ECG’s reforms.
He also outlined a transition to 100% gas utilization and a Renewable Energy Fund for solar and EV infrastructure. Additionally, Mahama announced efforts to revitalize Ghana’s upstream oil sector, securing investor commitments worth billions of dollars.
