Economist Professor Stephen Adei has urged that the E-levy should be maintained rather than scrapped, emphasizing that a rationalisation of taxes is preferable to their removal.
Speaking on TV3's Agenda show on March 4, he declared, "It is wrong to remove E-Levy," and proposed increasing the Betting Tax from 10% to 50% to discourage what he sees as a disastrous habit.
Adei’s views contrast with President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to eliminate several taxes, including the E-levy, COVID levy, Betting Tax, emissions levy, and import duties.
In a prior interview, a former GIMPA Rector endorsed higher "sin taxes" and called for a comprehensive tax review to streamline Ghana's complex tax system, highlighting the narrow tax base and excessive number of levies on imports.
