Public advised to renew NHIS card before emergencies

Ms. Linda Acquah is the Tema Metropolitan Director of the NHIA. She advises the public not to wait for emergencies to renew their NHIS membership. Many people rush to renew their membership only when they need medical help. This can lead to problems, as renewal takes about a month to process.

She shared this advice during the 2024 Annual Performance Review at the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate. Ms. Acquah urged health officials to educate clients on renewing their cards. Clients can use the ‘My NHIS App’ for renewal without visiting offices.

“Registration and renewal are now simple with the My NHIS App,” she said. There is no need to visit our office in person. Just download the app and use your Ghana Card for registration; no photo or fingerprint is required.

Ms. Acquah noted that some facilities face challenges accepting NHIS cards due to outdated software. This software cannot accept necessary codes generated by the app. She encouraged these facilities to upgrade their systems for better compatibility with current technology.
