Quarry Operators appeal for review of regulatory fee payment of US dollars to Ghana cedis - Ghana Business News

The Commercial Quarry Operators Association (COQUA) in Ghana has made a request to the government. They want regulatory fees changed from US dollars to Ghana cedis. This change would help reduce their operational costs.

The appeal was made during a refresher training program in Bolgatanga. The theme of the program was “Management and Best Practices in Quarry Operation.” COQUA organized this event with the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission. Members from Ashanti, North East, Upper East, and Upper West Regions attended.

Alhaji Iddrisu Yeldza is the Chairman of COQUA's Upper North branch. He highlighted that dollar-denominated fees hurt their business operations and growth. He urged the government to switch these payments to Ghana cedis.

Yeldza reminded officials that the quarry industry significantly contributes to GDP. He noted that infrastructure projects like roads and schools rely heavily on this sector. He also encouraged investors to establish quarries in Sissala East and Sissala West Districts due to abundant raw materials.

Mr. Jacob Labon, the Upper Quarry Manager, discussed operational challenges faced by quarries. He emphasized the need for decentralizing permit approvals for quarry operators. Currently, obtaining permits from the Minerals Commission is difficult and costly.

Ms. Georgina Dziwornu is COQUA's Executive Secretary. She urged members to promote unity among themselves for better advocacy on industry issues. She expressed disappointment that COQUA’s contributions are often overlooked by governments. Dziwornu called for greater recognition of their sector in government policies and engagements.
