Flooding affects us all, especially in our homes. Our homes should provide comfort and shelter. This is my second article on flood-proofing your home. While years change, the tips remain similar.
Some people need major structural changes. However, most of us just need minor adjustments. Let's refresh our list of flood-proofing tips.
Grade Your Lawn Away from the House
After light rainfall, check your foundation and lawn. The ground should slope away from your home’s foundation. If it tilts toward your house, rainwater will pool around it. You may need to install drainage for heavy storms.
Install a Backflow Valve
Sewage systems remove waste from homes. Flood water can enter these systems and cause backups. To prevent this, install a backflow valve in the sewer line. It opens when sewage exits but closes during reverse flow.
Regularly Clear Debris from Drains
Clearing debris is essential but often overlooked. Avoid piling leaves or mulch near drains that could block them. If you have many trees, rake regularly and bag leaves for pickup. Check nearby drains for blockages and clear them with a rake.
Check Your Roof
Flooding can also occur through roofs with leaks or cracks. Have a roof expert inspect your roof regularly to fix any issues early on. Consider living roofs made of permeable materials like grass or gardens to help drain rainwater into the soil.
Keep Sandbags Nearby
If flooding occurs, have sandbags ready at home. Use them to block doorways or low windows during emergencies if you live in a flood-prone area.
By following these tips, your home will be better prepared for floods.
