Workers of the Produce Buying Company (PBC) are urging the government to take urgent steps to revive the struggling firm, emphasizing that prolonged inaction is jeopardizing their livelihoods and the country's cocoa sector.
In an interview with Citi Business News, Vice Chairman of the PBC Workers’ Union, Seth Adusei, expressed frustration over the delay in appointing new leadership for the company.
He believes the appointment of a new CEO is critical for PBC’s recovery and for reassuring the staff that the government is responsive to their concerns, which were ignored by the previous administration.
Adusei also compared the government’s handling of PBC with its support for COCOBOD, despite the latter’s significant debt of GHC32 billion.
He questioned why the government is actively supporting COCOBOD while neglecting PBC, which has been struggling for months without significant intervention.
The workers are calling on the government to prioritize PBC’s revival, warning that continued neglect could further destabilize the cocoa sector, which relies on PBC’s operations.
