Rotary Club supports KBTH Sickle Cell Centre

A new initiative aims to improve healthcare facilities in Ghana. It will build five modern consultation rooms, an administrative block, and two washrooms. The project also includes renovating the old hospital block. This work will be completed in three months to enhance patient care.

Alice Otoo-Ocran, the club president, spoke at the project's launch in Accra. She emphasized the high rate of sickle cell disease and the need for better facilities. Sickle cell is a common inherited blood disorder affecting millions worldwide. In Ghana, over 15,000 children are born with it each year.

Accessing specialized care can be difficult for these children. Otoo-Ocran stated that this project directly addresses that challenge. The new facilities will help provide timely and effective care for sickle cell patients.

Amma Beneth-Akwesi Kuma from the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics praised Rotary Club Accra-Airport. She acknowledged their commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Ghana. The department sees 10,000 to 14,000 patient visits annually but struggles with congestion due to limited space.

Kuma called this intervention timely and crucial for patient care. She encouraged continued support from the club and urged other corporate institutions to contribute as well.
