Set clear deadlines in galamsey fight – Energy stakeholders to govt

Energy sector stakeholders are urging the government to act against illegal mining, known as galamsey. They want a clear and enforceable timeframe for this action. Holding key authorities accountable is crucial for effectively addressing the issue.

Some stakeholders believe that those with political connections should be prioritized. They argue these individuals should be dealt with before small-scale miners. Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of CEMSE, stressed the need for decisive action.

“We need a clear timeframe to resolve this issue,” he said. During this time, it’s important to identify and confront the causes of unsustainable mining. Nsiah suggested using frameworks like the GON theory from corruption studies.

This theory can help understand why people engage in galamsey. Some do it because they have the opportunity, while others do it out of necessity. Others may participate due to their access at high levels of governance.
