Social media is most used platform for accessing government services in Ghana – Report

A Public Opinion Survey by the Office of the President ran from October to December 2024. It found that social media is the main source of information for Ghanaians about government activities and services.

The survey revealed that the National Identification Authority is the most popular government office. The public frequently accesses Ghana-Card issuance services.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff, spoke at an Information Dissemination Session in Accra. She announced a Performance Ranking Index for all institutions under the Office of Government Machinery will be published by the third quarter of this year.

She urged OGM agencies to improve visibility using digital tools and social media. This would help inform the public about their activities.

Nana Oye also emphasized that OGM institutions should have functional websites. These sites should be regularly updated with annual reports, financial data, and operational information to build trust among citizens.

She encouraged proactive communication through town hall meetings and outreach campaigns. Investing in staff training is crucial for better customer service and responsiveness, she added.

The research highlighted gaps in awareness, transparency, visibility, and service delivery. Madam Shamima Muslim, Deputy Government Spokesperson, believes implementing these recommendations will build public trust and enhance efficiency.

She noted that OGM agency websites must be user-friendly and interactive. They should also include mechanisms for public feedback.

Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darko, Head of Civil Service, urged OGM management to use technology effectively. This can help reduce corruption by minimizing human interaction.

He stressed the importance of utilizing internal auditors to prevent financial issues within OGM institutions.

Some institutions under the Office of Government Machinery include State Protocol and Council of State. Others are SIGA, National Population Commission, Ghana Aids Commission, and Millennium Development Authority.

Additional agencies include Zongo Development Fund, MASLOC, National Centre for Early Warning Secretariat, Ghana News Agency, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and Information Services Department.

OGM Agencies support the Executive branch in implementing policies for improved service delivery and living standards.

The survey received over 1,000 responses from across all 16 regions using focus groups and online platforms for feedback.
