Accra, Ghana's capital, faces congestion and a housing shortage. Stakeholders in construction want better collaboration between the government and private sector. They believe this partnership is essential to address these urgent issues.
Daniel Ohene Adu, Project Manager for Cities and Habitats, warns of challenges without strategic partnerships. He stresses that government intervention is vital for urban planning and sustainable housing development.
The population in Accra keeps increasing. More people are moving from rural areas. The local population is also growing, contributing to a significant housing deficit.
A report from the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry shows rising costs. Key construction materials have increased by 18% over the past year. This surge adds financial pressure on developers and homeowners, making housing less affordable.
At a reunion for the Accra Academy 1991 Old Boys Association, president Nana Boahene Asamoah emphasized policy implementation. He urged the Mahama-led administration to adopt practical policies to tackle economic challenges.
He noted that poor implementation has been a longstanding issue in Ghana. Bridging this gap could help achieve many important goals.
Daniel Ohene Adu also called on the Finance Minister to consider subsidies for construction materials. This could make housing more affordable and speed up urban development. He believes it’s possible to provide housing without borrowing if proper advice is given to the ministry.
