Storm-induced power outages: ASEC advocates strengthening power infrastructure, others

Recent power outages have affected businesses, homes, and hospitals. This situation highlights the urgent need for stronger infrastructure. It is essential to prepare for extreme weather events.

The loss of ECG’s electrical equipment poses a serious threat. Missing cables and components may delay important upgrades. This could worsen Ghana's already fragile energy supply.

ASEC has called for immediate action in two main areas:

**Power Infrastructure Reforms:**

1. **Upgrade Power Lines:** Transition from overhead to underground systems where possible.
2. **Modernize Substations and Transformers:** Replace old equipment to improve reliability.
3. **Integrate Smart Grid Technology:** Use advanced monitoring systems for real-time fault detection.
4. **Invest in Renewable Energy:** Expand solar, wind, and other sustainable sources.

**Procurement and Governance Reforms:**

1. **Forensic Audit & Investigation:** Conduct an independent audit of ECG’s supply chain.
2. **Enhanced Security & Tracking Systems:** Implement digital tracking for ECG shipments with GPS monitoring.
3. **Strengthened Oversight & Accountability:** Create a task force to oversee critical infrastructure shipments.
4. **Public Procurement & Transparency Reforms:** Increase transparency in procurement processes to reduce fraud.

ASEC warns that failing to act will worsen Ghana’s energy crisis. This inaction could hinder economic growth and disrupt daily life for millions.

The center urges the government to act quickly. They recommend encouraging private sector involvement and allocating funds for energy projects. A stable, sustainable power supply is crucial for Ghana's future.
