Sustainable mining essential for future generations – President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stressed the importance of sustainable mining in preserving Ghana’s environment for future generations. He called for responsible gold extraction and distinguished the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) from opposition to mining overall.

Addressing Parliament during the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, Akufo-Addo acknowledged political challenges stemming from his anti-galamsey stance, which contributed to his party's loss of parliamentary seats in 2020.

He highlighted achievements, including Ghana surpassing South Africa as Africa’s leading gold producer, revitalizing dormant mines, and commencing new mining operations.

Infrastructure developments include a 400kg gold refinery, a planned $450 million manganese refinery, and progress in aluminum and steel industrialization.

Environmental efforts under the Green Ghana Project have also restored 721,000 hectares of forests and planted over 52 million trees.
