TAEF calls on Burkinabe military authorities to release detained journalists immediately - Ghana Business News

Ibrahim Traore – Burkinabe Military Leader

The African Editors Forum (TAEF) has called for the release of three journalists in Burkina Faso. They are currently detained for their views.

On April 7, 2025, TAEF issued a statement expressing deep concern. The group represents editors, media managers, and educators across Africa. They highlighted the erosion of press freedom in Burkina Faso.

The statement addressed the arbitrary arrest and treatment of Guézouma Sanogo, Boukari Ouoba, and Luc Pagbelguem. A disturbing video shows these journalists in military uniforms while in custody.

TAEF stated that this footage raises fears for their safety. It also highlights the humiliation and criminalization of journalists by military authorities.

The forum strongly condemned these actions and demanded their immediate release. TAEF noted that detaining media professionals violates their rights and dignity. This creates a climate of fear that undermines journalistic independence.

These actions violate Burkina Faso’s obligations under international law. This includes the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

TAEF urged Burkinabe authorities to release the journalists without delay. They also called for an end to media repression and a commitment to press freedom.

The group appealed to regional and international actors for support. This includes organizations like the African Union, ECOWAS, UNESCO, and global press freedom groups.

“Journalism is not a crime,” TAEF stated. It is essential for democracy and public accountability. The safety, independence, and dignity of journalists must always be upheld.
