TGS empowers Ngalekyi fishing community

The event was supported by Chief Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV and local leaders. They provided the Ngalekyi palace as the venue.

Residents, including 100 children, were screened for various health issues. These included hypertension, blood sugar levels, malaria, and infections. Those diagnosed received free medication or referrals to the district hospital.

As part of a financial literacy effort, several adults opened savings accounts. Nzema Manle Rural Bank waived initial deposit requirements to encourage saving. This aimed to help residents build responsible financial habits.

Eugenia Aidoo-Laryea, TGS Country Director for Ghana, spoke about the outreach. She said it reflects TGS’s commitment to community engagement. “This program is part of our CSR efforts in Ghana’s Western Region,” she noted.

A baseline survey showed limited healthcare access and low banking engagement in Ngalekyi. This insight led TGS to provide essential health and financial services directly to residents.

To support ongoing care after the event, TGS donated remaining medications and new medical equipment. This included blood pressure monitors, weighing scales, and test kits for malaria and blood sugar.

Ellembelle District Chief Executive Joseph Agyekum welcomed the outreach initiative. He praised TGS Ghana and its partners for their efforts.

District Director of Health Services Dr. Augustine Kwesi Amoako emphasized the initiative's importance. He highlighted its support for key WHO pillars: access to free medication and health financing.

Dr. Amoako valued the focus on screening for diseases like hypertension and diabetes that are often overlooked.

TGS continues to support community-based programs worldwide. Feedback from Ngalekyi residents showed strong appreciation for this outreach event. They expressed a desire for future events like this one.
