The winning team (8): The dynamics of teamwork team celebration

Performance evaluations often focus on poor performers. High achievers may feel overlooked. This is similar to a football coach who only highlights mistakes, even after victories. Some CEOs concentrate on correcting employee faults instead of recognizing good work.

In this negative environment, creative employees feel discouraged. Their contributions to the organization’s success go unnoticed. Senior managers often receive motivation and rewards, while middle and lower-level staff are ignored. These grassroots workers significantly contribute to growth but remain unappreciated.

Top executives believe that lower-level employees will eventually enjoy benefits when promoted. They think these workers should wait for their turn at rewards.

A good corporate institution should motivate all employees at every level. It must work towards achieving its vision and core values together.

Some leaders follow Machiavelli's principle: "the end justifies the means." For them, only the final product matters. Workers' efforts are undervalued until the organization reaches its goals. Employees must sacrifice and wait for recognition until targets are met.

As a child, I learned about mid-term celebrations from my mother. My family worked on a farm in Ghana during harvest time. We would wake up early to collect produce like cassava for sale in the market.

My mother would set aside some of the best tubers for us to eat at home. She believed we should celebrate our hard work by enjoying our produce too. As a child, I didn’t understand this; I thought we needed money more than food.

Now, I appreciate her gesture and its importance in motivating us as a family. Corporations should also celebrate mid-term achievements to encourage employees toward corporate goals.

Many businesses schedule special occasions to celebrate milestones annually or bi-annually. Some hold events at their premises, while others choose hotels or event centers.

During these celebrations, companies express gratitude to God for knowledge and teamwork that improve lives and environments.

These events also acknowledge all levels of employees as key stakeholders in success. Board members, advisory councils, clients, customers, and benchmark organizations are invited too.

Sometimes companies invite employees’ families to join in the celebrations as well. These memorable events recognize everyone’s efforts and contributions.

The right leadership can create an enabling work environment that motivates employees to excel further in their roles. With proper support from management, teams can achieve greater heights together.
