On Thursday, PayPal experienced a brief but significant global outage, affecting various services, including account withdrawals, express checkout, cryptocurrency transactions, and its peer-to-peer payment app, Venmo.
The disruption, which started at 10:53 UTC and was resolved shortly after, caused issues for customers who reported problems logging in and making payments.
Downdetector recorded over 7,000 user reports by 12:12 GMT, with many users turning to social media to share their frustrations, including login errors. PayPal acknowledged the outage as a "system issue" on its service status page and assured users that it had been swiftly addressed.
The incident highlights the critical role of PayPal, which serves 432 million active accounts as of September 2023, in global financial transactions since its founding in 1998.
