The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, commissioned three Rural Telephony sites in the Sekyere East district of the Ashanti Region, benefitting the communities of Anumso, Brofoyedru-Awaham, and Bouya. These areas previously lacked telecommunication services, forcing residents to travel long distances or climb trees to make calls.
The sites are part of the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project (GRT&DIP), which aims to expand telecom access to underserved regions.
Owusu-Ekuful highlighted the government's commitment to improving connectivity and bridging the urban-rural digital divide, with plans to construct 2,016 cell sites. She urged communities to protect the sites from vandalism.
GIFEC’s Eva Andoh-Poku noted that the project addresses areas where operators face commercial constraints.
