The Kumasi City Market Traders Union (KCMTU) has a message for the new Mayor, Mr. Ofori Agyeman. They want him to take a stronger approach to decongestion efforts. Street vendors continue to defy regulations, and there are claims of corruption within the taskforce.
The union is frustrated with the ongoing cycle of decongestion. Vendors are removed but return just days later. Some traders use tricks to reclaim unauthorized spaces, making previous efforts useless.
During a visit to the Mayor, KCMTU leaders stressed the need for strict enforcement. They believe harsh penalties are necessary for repeat offenders. The union also called for an investigation into alleged corruption among city officials.
They claim some officials may accept bribes and ignore violations. This undermines their own decongestion efforts.
A KCMTU representative stated, “We want the Mayor to succeed.” However, they emphasized that this requires addressing both stubborn traders and corrupt officials.
The traders argue that street chaos poses serious dangers. It clogs walkways, obstructs traffic, and threatens safety for everyone involved. For them, restoring order in the Central Business District is crucial for protecting lives and livelihoods.
