The Ministry of Transport has set up a 13-member inter-agency committee to review aspects of the Road Traffic Regulations 2021 (L.I. 2180) that prohibit the use of motorcycles, commonly known as "okada," for commercial purposes.
According to Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the committee has been given three weeks to complete its work, which includes stakeholder consultations and recommendations for amending the law.
The minister emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Mahama government's commitment to legalizing okada operations. He noted that the government aims to create opportunities for young people by allowing them to use motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes, thereby providing a legal avenue for income generation.
