The Trump administration has dismantled the U.S. initiative to boost electricity access in Africa, Power Africa, after over a decade of work, according to Bloomberg.
Most programs under the initiative have been terminated, and staff have been dismissed. Some efforts, particularly those linking projects with U.S. companies, may continue under other agencies.
Launched in 2013 by former President Obama, Power Africa aimed to expand electricity access across the continent. A State Department spokesperson stated that all programs are under review to ensure alignment with U.S. interests, with only those benefiting the nation continuing.
The initiative was previously managed by USAID and became an early target in the federal budget-cutting efforts led by the Department of Government Efficiency under Elon Musk.
