UN lauds Pope Francis’ contribution to Paris Agreement on Climate Change

The United Nations has praised Pope Francis for his role in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted Pope Francis' influence in global mobilization that led to this agreement.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Easter Monday at age 88.

The Vatican confirmed his death at 07:35 local time.

Guterres recalled Pope Francis’ historic visit to UN Headquarters in 2015. During this visit, he spoke about a “united human family.”

He emphasized that protecting our planet is a moral responsibility for everyone.

The statement noted that his encyclical, *Laudato Si*, significantly contributed to the Paris Agreement.

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina on December 17, 1936. He became pope on March 13, 2013, surprising many observers.

He was known for his concern for the poor and received several awards. In 2017, he won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Freedom Fighter of the Year.

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted in 2015 by member nations.

Its main goal is to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The treaty also aims to keep temperature increases to 1.5°C.

It includes an action plan with commitments to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts. Additionally, it provides financial support to developing nations.
