UniMAC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MILID. This makes it the first university in Ghana to join the UNESCO MILID Network. The agreement shows UniMAC's commitment to promoting Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
Under the MoU, UniMAC will work with the MILID Network on several activities. These include participating in UNESCO conferences and organizing local lectures. They will also develop MIL internship programs and publish newsletters about their activities. Additionally, they will collaborate with libraries through seminars and workshops.
As an affiliate member of the MILID Network, UniMAC will receive mentorship for one year. The University of Lagos in Nigeria will provide this guidance. The University of Lagos is a full member of the UNESCO-MILID Network.
UniMAC aims to use its membership to enhance Media and Information Literacy education in Ghana and beyond. The UNESCO MILID network offers valuable opportunities for collaboration with other institutions globally.
This membership allows students and faculty to engage in advanced MIL research and exchange programs. It also enables them to contribute to policy initiatives in this field. UniMAC's involvement strengthens its leadership role in advancing media literacy education in Ghana.
It is important to note that UniMAC was formed by merging three institutions: GIJ, NAFTI, and the Ghana Institute of Languages. This merger occurred through an Act of Parliament in 2020 (Act 1059).
The Act establishes a holding university with constituent institutes that can award degrees. UniMAC is well-positioned to deliver high-quality education in Media, Arts, and Communications at the tertiary level.
