Dr. Eric Kofi Obutey, Director of Research and Corporate Affairs at the PURC, has defended the Commission’s recent utility tariff increases, stressing they were not made at the detriment of consumers.
The new adjustments—14.75% for electricity and 4.02% for water—take effect under the first half of 2025's quarterly review.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Dr. Obutey attributed the changes to prevailing economic indicators such as the cedi-dollar exchange rate, inflation, fuel prices (especially natural gas), and the hydro-thermal power mix.
He maintained that the revised tariffs are moderate, describing them as “not a killer tariff.” According to him, while minor adjustments are exempt from public hearings, they are guided by transparent, evidence-based calculations.
A comprehensive tariff review is expected next quarter, but Dr. Obutey was unable to predict whether it would lead to further increases or reductions, assuring that consumer protection and utility sustainability remain top priorities for the Commission.
