Dr. Humphrey Ayim Darke, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has called for urgent measures to stabilize Ghana’s energy sector and address the Independent Power Producers (IPP) debt crisis.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, Dr. Darke emphasized that businesses face significant challenges due to energy uncertainties, warning that the $259 million owed to IPPs by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is a “ticking time bomb.”
IPP CEO Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor revealed that three key power plants risk shutdown next week if the debt remains unpaid, exacerbating industrial disruptions and investor concerns.
Dr. Darke urged presidential candidates to prioritize energy reforms, highlighting the risks to macroeconomic stability. He called for immediate debt repayment, long-term solutions, and a forward-thinking approach to prevent future crises.
