A new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aims to improve waste management in Lagos State. This project will create around 5,000 jobs.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and JGC Executive Chairman Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong formalized the partnership at the State House in Alausa, Ikeja.
The collaboration includes developing two key facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant. These facilities will help modernize Lagos's waste management system.
Currently, Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. The agreement also involves constructing Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at Olusosun Dumpsite and Solous III Dumpsite.
The TLS at Olusosun will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu. The TLS at Solous III will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to a new MRF in Badagry. Self-tipping tricycles will also be used for better waste collection in hard-to-reach areas.
All projects are expected to be completed within 18 months. Governor Sanwo-Olu called the agreement a "turning point" for waste management in the state. He noted it would enhance operations for PSP waste operators and create over 5,000 jobs.
Environment Commissioner Mr. Tokunbo Wahab described the project as a major milestone toward a circular waste economy. He stated that wealth can now be generated from previously discarded materials.
On May 26, 2025, Zoomlion signed another MoU with Kinshasa City in DRC. This partnership focuses on collecting and converting municipal waste into valuable products.
It is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs in Kinshasa’s waste management sector. Hon. Léon Mulumba Mwana Nshiya represented Kinshasa during the signing.
He emphasized their commitment to building a cleaner Kinshasa through this agreement. Jospong delegation leader Mr. Daniel Amuyaw Addo expressed enthusiasm about the partnership.
He highlighted Jospong’s dedication to innovative waste management solutions for Kinshasa and thanked all stakeholders involved. As a goodwill gesture, he presented a token of appreciation to Governor Daniel Bumba Lubaki.
The Governor stressed the project's importance for Africa's global image and environmental well-being in Kinshasa.
On May 29, 2025, Jospong signed an MoU with Addis Ababa City Council in Ethiopia as well. This agreement aims to establish Integrated Waste Management Infrastructure in Addis Ababa.
It will improve existing facilities for a cleaner environment there. Under this MoU, Jospong Group will invest in developing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
They will also set up Compact/Mobile Transfer Loading Stations for efficient waste management and have exclusive rights to manage these projects for some time.
Once completed, this facility is expected to create around 5,000 jobs and enhance sanitation standards while supporting Ethiopia's environmental goals.
At the signing ceremony, both parties highlighted the partnership's significance for urban waste challenges. Deputy Mayor Hon. Eng. Wendimu Seta called it a major milestone toward sustainability in Addis Ababa.
With Jospong Group’s expertise, he believes they can achieve an efficient and eco-friendly system soon. Further details on implementation timelines and specific projects under this MoU will be announced later.
