Zoomlion workers storm YEA office over unpaid salary arrears

Dozens of Zoomlion workers protested at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) on Thursday. They demanded payment for salary arrears owed for over a year and five months. The workers are struggling to make ends meet due to these delays.

They met with YEA's Chief Executive Officer, Malik Basintale. They sought redress and government intervention during this meeting. Mr. Basintale appreciated their peaceful approach and promised to help.

"I will do everything I can to ensure your arrears are paid soon," he said. He noted that the outstanding salaries were inherited from the previous administration. Steps are being taken to engage the Finance Ministry for necessary funds.

This protest follows previous demonstrations by Zoomlion workers. They have raised concerns about poor working conditions and unpaid wages before. Regarding worker pay, Mr. Basintale opposed the new contract rate of GHC 258 per month.

He stated that this amount is not enough for basic living needs. He emphasized that President John Mahama's government is committed to improving workers' living standards. They aim to prevent such situations from happening again in the future.
