A deadly chieftaincy dispute has escalated in the Bunkprugu/Nakpanduri district of the North East Region, leaving three people burnt beyond recognition in Nanik.

Among the deceased is 27-year-old teacher Nashiru Maijida, who was posted to the village two years ago.

The victims' bodies have been sent to Binde Hospital for autopsy.

The attack, allegedly carried out by a rival faction from Bimbagu, also saw nearly 50 houses set ablaze, with significant property damage.

Tensions between the two communities stem from opposition to the elevation of Nanik’s chief to paramountcy status.

Despite appeals from Bimbagu leaders to halt the process, the dispute has now turned violent, raising urgent security concerns.
