The Central North Regional Police Command's Anti-Galamsey taskforce has made five arrests. Three of the suspects are Chinese, and two are Ghanaians. They were caught engaging in illegal mining along River Fum in Assin Ayitey. This area is near Assin Akonfudi, a farming community in the Assin North District.
The suspects are Duut Kwabena Sakakba (38), Douglas Nyamekye (36), Ma Jian (37), Ma Young (31), and Ma Haibi (54).
During the operation, police discovered two excavators at the site. The excavators have chassis numbers SY 6HK1-XABEA-01-C3 and SWE365EOO762. The operators fled with the ignition keys. However, police are working to secure the machines.
Authorities are also trying to locate the owners of the equipment for legal action. In addition to the excavators, a Toyota Hilux pickup truck was found at the location. The truck is registered as GE 2743-13 and has been impounded for further investigation.
The arrested suspects will be presented in court soon. They face charges related to illegal mining activities.
