Cab driver jailed 25 years for defiling fiancée’s sister

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 22-year-old taxi driver. His name is Godgift Acquah, also known as Kwame Atta. He received a 25-year prison term for defiling his fiancée’s sister.

Acquah pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement. He asked the court for forgiveness.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joyce Odame was the prosecutor. She stated that the complainant is a farmer from Prestea. The victim, her niece, is only 14 years old.

The convict was in a relationship with the victim’s elder sister. They shared a room in Himan, located in the Western Region.

In November 2024, at around 11:00 pm, the victim's sister left home. She attended an event nearby and left Acquah alone with the victim.

While the victim slept, Acquah covered her mouth with a pillow. He then forcibly had unprotected sexual intercourse with her.

During this act, the victim bled on the bed sheet. Acquah convinced her to wash it to hide his crime.

On February 21, 2025, at about 8:30 pm, Acquah bought emergency contraceptive pills called Postinor-2. He persuaded the victim to take them to prevent pregnancy.

The victim later showed these pills to her brother and told him what happened. Her brother became angry and disposed of the pills.

He then arrested Acquah and took him to Prestea police station with help from neighbors. Together with their mother, they reported the incident to police.

Police issued a medical form for the victim to visit a hospital. A medical officer examined her and confirmed she had been defiled.

ASP Odame revealed that further investigations showed Acquah has Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). He regularly visits hospitals for treatment.

Before delivering judgment, Judge Mrs Manu paused for several minutes. She looked intently at Acquah and said he had caused lifelong misery for his victim.

She added that people like him are not welcome in society. Therefore, he would receive a harsh sentence to deter others from similar crimes.
