Court jails apprentice for camera theft

The Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced an apprentice to three years in prison.

Benjamin Okyere stole his trainer’s cameras and other valuables.

He was convicted for taking two R10 Canon cameras worth GH¢30,000. He also stole a silver bracelet and wristwatch valued at GH¢500.

His accomplice, Bernard Nwaeze, bought one stolen camera for GH¢18,000.

Okyere denied the charges but was found guilty after trial. He received a three-year sentence.

Nwaeze was granted bail of GH¢30,000 with two sureties but has fled.

Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah informed the court about the case. The complainant is Francis Sarkodie, a photographer from Achiaman near Amasaman.

Okyere is a labourer and Nwaeze is a phone repairer; both live in Nungua.

On December 2, 2023, Sarkodie reported to police that Okyere had stolen his items and disappeared.

Efforts to find Okyere failed until June 6, 2024. Police arrested both suspects after receiving a tip-off.

Investigations showed Okyere sold one camera to Nwaeze for GH¢1,000. He sent the other camera to his hometown in Peki; police could not recover it.

During questioning, both men admitted their involvement in the crime. They were charged and brought to court.
