Driver remanded over alleged escape from police custody

A 28-year-old driver, Razak Sulley, has been remanded by an Adentan Circuit Court. He is accused of escaping from the Madina Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Sulley faces charges for escaping lawful custody and pleaded not guilty. He told the court he had been in cells without food. He asked an investigator if his GHC35 could buy food.

“I was given a hefty slap,” Sulley claimed. He added that he regretted his actions.

Judge Mrs. Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa remanded Sulley into lawful custody. She directed the prosecution to file their disclosures.

The case is adjourned to May 21, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC).

Inspector Theresa Djwerter is prosecuting the case. She informed the court that a female police officer is the complainant. Sulley lives in Ashongman, Accra, and was involved in a fraudulent breach of trust case.

On March 25, 2025, Sulley appeared before the Adentan Circuit Court. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GHC80,000 with two sureties.

However, he remained in custody while police awaited his sureties. On March 28, 2025, Sulley requested to call his sureties again.

While at the CID office, he attempted to leave despite orders to stay seated. Sulley ran downstairs through the Charge Office toward the main entrance.

He tried to escape but was pursued and caught at the station’s entrance. The prosecution revealed that Sulley admitted his offense in a caution statement.
