The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) officials arrested Hawa Fuseini at the Aflao border. She was a passenger on a Nagode Transport vehicle, registration number TG 5846 BN. The arrest occurred on Friday.
The bus, driven by Babayara Rashid, was carrying contraband products. These items were loaded in Lome-Togo and headed to Accra. Officials discovered the drugs during a joint examination around 5:30 PM.
They found Viagra (sildenafil), Spanish gold fly, Diazepam, Rohypnol, and tramadol red. These drugs were hidden in a carton of Cream Cracker biscuits. Hawa Fuseini's name appeared on her Ghana Card, but the bus manifest listed her as ‘Assindo Awa.’
Mr. Gorden Akurugu is the Volta Regional Director of FDA. He told the Ghana News Agency that this concealment suggests intentional smuggling. The drugs entered through an unauthorized border.
He noted that these drugs are not registered in Ghana. Their effectiveness cannot be verified without proper oversight. Such drugs should not be transported by unqualified individuals along inland borders.
Mr. Akurugu stated that only Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour are designated for importing such drugs. Any other method violates regulations.
He urged importers to follow legal processes to avoid penalties. He also warned neighboring countries to prevent criminals from using their borders for drug smuggling.
With collaboration and vigilance, he believes they can combat sub-standard drugs effectively. The FDA now conducts 24-hour operations at borders with full inspections of all entries and exits.
Hawa will appear in court on Monday, May 12, 2025. Assistant Superintendent of Police Eric Bamfo confirmed her arrest and upcoming court appearance.
