Nine members of a 16-person fake currency syndicate have been convicted by the Nsuta Circuit Court for circulating counterfeit money across the Ashanti, Bono East, and Western Regions.
The group used fake GH₵200, GH₵100, GH₵10, and GH₵5 notes to purchase goods at locations such as Kumasi’s Embassy and Ducor Hotels.
Following a police operation that seized GH₵34,658 in genuine currency and GH₵41,111 in counterfeit notes, the court sentenced the convicts to fines ranging from GH₵6,000 to GH₵12,000 or prison terms of 2 to 5 years.
Four others were acquitted, and bench warrants were issued for five absentees.
The counterfeit money will be destroyed by the Bank of Ghana.
