Father jailed 10 years for impregnating 15-year-old daughter

The Circuit Court in Tokor, Ketu South Municipality, has sentenced a father to 10 years in prison. Joseph Ofosu Behome presided over the case against 36-year-old Kofitse Zigah. He was convicted for impregnating his 15-year-old daughter.

Zigah, an electrician from Adoteykope near Aflao, defiled his daughter twice. He pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and received a prison sentence.

Police Inspector Albert Kombor presented the case in court. The complainant, Miss Faustina Elikplim Korwu, is an Assembly member for Avoeme West Electoral Area. On May 1, 2025, she took the victim to the Aflao Police Station to report the crime.

Inspector Kombor explained that one evening in February, Zigah celebrated his birthday. He gave his daughter a non-alcoholic drink that made her drowsy. After she fell asleep, she woke up with a strange substance on her lap.

The victim showed this substance to her father. He did not respond or comment on it. On April 15, during another birthday celebration for the victim, Zigah again gave her a drink suspected of being laced with sedatives.

After consuming the drink, he took her into his bedroom and had sexual intercourse with her again. Later that month, she felt tired and had headaches and told Zigah about it.

On May 1, while running an errand for him, Miss Korwu encountered the victim. Upon questioning her, the girl revealed what had happened. This led to reporting the case to police.

Following this report, police provided a medical form for examination at Ketu South Municipal Hospital. The results confirmed that the victim was 15 weeks and 4 days pregnant.

Zigah pleaded guilty when first arraigned on May 5 and received his sentence during a second court appearance.

Miss Korwu expressed satisfaction with how quickly justice was served. She hoped for a longer sentence but understood that health issues may have influenced the judge's decision.

According to Ghana’s Criminal Code (1960 ACT 29), anyone convicted of sexual intercourse with a child under age 16 faces imprisonment between seven and twenty-five years.
