The Ashanti South office of Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) has detained five suspects. They are accused of illegally tapping into GWCL’s water supply pipeline.
These arrests followed unpaid surcharges totaling GH₵31,803.97 for illegal connections. The operation aimed to reduce commercial losses and ensure fair water access in the region.
Of the five arrested, three have paid their outstanding amounts of GH₵11,515.00. The other two remain in police custody until they pay their dues.
GWCL officials highlighted the growing issue of illegal connections. These activities lead to Non-Revenue Water (NRW), which is lost due to theft or leaks.
Such actions harm revenue and threaten efforts to maintain water infrastructure. Innocentia Kuupiel, Acting Regional Chief Manager of GWCL Ashanti South, praised the Central Police for their support during this operation.
She hopes these arrests will deter others from similar crimes. “Illegal connections have increased in the Ashanti region,” she noted.
GWCL urges residents to report any suspicious activities related to water connections. Mr. Ebenezer Kwabena Padi, Regional Public Relations Officer, emphasized the company's commitment to its customers.
He called on the public to join in fighting illegal water connections that deprive resources needed for operations.
