Illegal miner sentenced to 5 years for stealing mobile phones

A 23-year-old illegal miner has been sentenced to five years in prison. The Nkawie circuit court in the Ashanti region convicted him for stealing three mobile phones.

The convict, Francis Amadu, also known as Kojo Amadu, pleaded guilty. He was convicted based on his own admission.

Police Detective Inspector Dickson Kwaku Frimpong presented the case. He told the court that both the complainant and the convict lived in Nweneso Number One.

On March 29, around 3:00 AM, Eric Eyezera and his brother were asleep. Amadu sneaked into their room and stole three mobile phones worth GHc 3,350.

When they woke up, they saw him trying to escape with the phones. They chased after him but he managed to flee.

The complainant reported the incident to a local Unit Committee Member. A search party was formed to find Amadu.

He was later arrested at his hideout in Nweneso with the stolen phones. The police took him to Atwima Hwidiem police station.

In his caution statement, Amadu admitted to the crime. After further investigation, he was charged and brought before the court.
