Kwabena Frimpong, a labourer, has been sentenced to five years in prison. The Adenta Circuit Court found him guilty of stealing three air-conditioning outdoor units.
Frimpong stole the units worth GH¢12,000. He was working as a gardener for a retired lecturer in Amrahia, Accra.
In court, Frimpong said financial hardship drove him to steal. His pregnant wife had asked him for money.
He claimed he sold each unit for GH¢1,000 to a friend named Ebenezer. However, Ebenezer's whereabouts are currently unknown.
Judge Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa convicted Frimpong based on his own plea and deferred sentencing.
The prosecution was led by Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban. They noted that Frimpong had worked for the complainant for five years.
In March, while working in the compound, he removed the air-conditioning units and fled.
Police later arrested Frimpong at a construction site near Kotoka International Airport after he hid from them.
He admitted selling the items to Ebenezer in Dawhenya but could not help recover them.
