The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a British national, Naomi Mbelu, for attempting to smuggle cannabis through Kotoka International Airport (KIA). She was intercepted on Saturday, March 22, 2025, after arriving from Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 921.
Mbelu’s travel history, which showed she had departed from Bangkok, raised suspicions among NACOC officers. Her behavior at the airport prompted a thorough search, leading to the discovery of 41 black polythene-sealed parcels in her possession. A field test confirmed the substance as cannabis, weighing 21.38kg.
Further investigations resulted in the arrest of two alleged accomplices, Joseph Asoa and Isaac Anum Sowah. Asoa is suspected of facilitating Mbelu’s visa-on-arrival, while Sowah was identified as the driver assigned to pick her up from the airport.
All three suspects are currently in custody as NACOC intensifies investigations. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling drug trafficking at Ghana’s borders, warning that offenders will face the full extent of the law.
